South Carolina Video Poker Case Continues to Drag On

Law enforcement officials in South Carolina have made it clear that they are dead set against video poker machines in establishments in the South Carolina area. For quite some time the video poker machines have been a ubiquitous part of the South Carolina landscape, dotting the highways and roadsides with video poker game rooms that featured little more than a few machines off in the back surrounded by dated versions of Galaga and Pac Man. While these establishments could only loosely be referred to as game rooms, they did feature the video poker machines that most users were hunting for, while also featuring the dated video games that simply collected dust or made suitable hat and coat racks for the video poker players. As with any kind of legalized gaming and gambling, the excessive amount of legalization, regulation and officiating that gets conducted by the local government in relation to the actual impact of the gaming media itself is always some kind of ridiculous out of proportion effort that has little to do with any type of realistic effect of gambling on the community. In most cases, these types of anti-gambling crusades are simply springboards for new election or reelection campaigns that allow local government officials to show their potential constituents that they have made progress in some way, shape or form.
In South Carolina, the video poker machines are an easy target for officials who are against the playing of poker, hosting poker tournaments or watching people play poker on television. This extreme tendency by government officials to take the viewpoint of the moral majority has frequently colored many of the arguments for and against different forms of gaming and gambling in general. In this case, it would appear that government officials on the local and state level have jumped on the bandwagon and are dead set against any type of video poker being allowed in the South Carolina area, despite its successful implementation for several years and the tremendous amount of revenue that has been generated for establishment proprietors as well as tax revenue that has come to the great state of South Carolina, despite its reluctance to participate in such activities.
Until government separates itself from the moral majority, the largely fictional base of morally outraged individuals who can’t stand the concept of any type of gambling, gaming or any other fun or exciting pastimes, there will be little progress made in the area of these types of poker and other types of gaming establishment deregulation and repealing of existing laws.
